CottonCotton - and echos of slavery. Antigua's history is full of slavery from when the first ships landed their miserable cargo for the sugar plantations to the time when sugar became uneconomic and work was scarce. I had seen a small notation "cotton farm" on the map and drove over to have a look. Because of the absurdity of growing cotton, a notoriously thirsty plant, on an island that whas chronically short of water I expected a relic. As I parked by the edge of the road I could see a couple of workers in the field. I walked across and introduced myself. To my surprise it was a working farm and this is the picture. I think that the lady's clothes in the breeze and light give it an almost Rembrant quality (pretentious? Moi?). Back to the picture. |
