That night scenes outside Kensington approached a kind of quiet mass hysteria as people came from all over the country to contemplate the flowers, candles and messages. It was estimated that about £30m ($50m) was spent on flowers by the public and this resulted in the clear cutting of flower farms as far away as Columbia and Israel.
